SUMMARY:Cancelled: June 1 Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Fishing Creek Farm Book Club on June 1\, 2023\, at 7:00 pm to discuss the classic For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. Unless it is raining\, we will have our first outdoor meeting on the deck of the Clubhouse. \nAmazon writes about this book: \n” In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight” and one of the foremost classics of war literature. \nFor Whom the Bell Tolls tells of loyalty and courage\, love and defeat\, and the tragic death of an ideal. Robert Jordan\, a young American in the International Brigades\, is attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of a guerilla leader’s last stand\, Hemingway creates a work at once rare and beautiful\, strong and brutal\, compassionate\, moving\, and wise. Greater in power\, broader in scope\, and more intensely emotional than any of the author’s previous works\, For Whom the Bell Tolls stands as one of the best war novels ever written.” \nI look forward to seeing everyone there. \nSusan S. SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The next book we will read is The Cape Doctor by E. J. Levy. We will meet on March 14\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fishing Creek Farm Clubhouse. \nGoodreads describes “The Cape Doctor” as an “enthralling novel\, inspired by the life of Dr. James Miranda Barry that brings this captivating character vividly alive.” \nA “gorgeous\, thoughtful\, heartbreaking” historical novel\, The Cape Doctor is the story of one man’s journey from penniless Irish girl to one of most celebrated and accomplished figures of his time (Lauren Fox\, New York Times bestselling author of Send for Me). \n“Beginning in Cork\, Ireland\, the novel recounts Jonathan Mirandus Perry’s journey from daughter to son in order to enter medical school and provide for family\, but Perry soon embraced the new-found freedom of living life as a man. From brilliant medical student in Edinburgh and London to eligible bachelor and quick-tempered physician in Cape Town\, Dr. Perry thrived. When he befriended the aristocratic Cape Governor\, the doctor rose to the pinnacle of society\, before the two were publicly accused of a homosexual affair that scandalized the colonies and nearly cost them their lives.” \nFor the April meeting\, we will read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. We will read and discuss Deacon King Kong by James McBride for the May meeting. \nThe members plan to read at least one Ernest Hemingway novel. We welcome suggestions for which of Hemingway’s books the members would like to discuss. \nAll the best for continued good reading\, \nSusan Magazine\nsusan@magazinefamily.org\n301-213-1799

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We’re Looking for New Members!\nThe Fishing Creek Farm Book Club is looking for a few more book lovers to join the group. The Book Club welcomes all\, both men and women. The meetings are approximately monthly.  The members at the meetings choose the next book to read and the date for the next meeting. The discussions are informal and are a wonderful way to share a love of books and to get to know our neighbors better. Now that a new year is approaching\, please make a promise to yourself to participate in the pleasure of our meetings. \nThe next Book Club meeting will be Wednesday\, January 18\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fishing Creek Farm Clubhouse. The book we will read is The Sentence by Louise Erdrich. \nRon Charles of the Washington Post says that The Sentence is among Louise Erdrich’s most magical novels. \nGoodreads comments:\n“The Sentence asks what we owe to the living\, the dead\, to the reader and to the book. \nA small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store’s most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls’ Day\, but she simply won’t leave the store. Tookie\, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading with murderous attention\, must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief\, astonishment\, isolation\, and furious reckoning. \nThe Sentence begins on All Souls’ Day 2019 and ends on All Souls’ Day 2020. Its mystery and proliferating ghost stories during this one year propel a narrative as rich\, emotional\, and profound as anything Louise Erdrich has written.” \nWishing each and everyone a wonderful holiday and a happy new year. \nSusan S.
