SUMMARY:FCF Book Club
DESCRIPTION:DATE CHANGE – The next Fishing Creek Farm Book Club discussion will be Monday\, May 10\, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.  We hope to have the meeting on the deck at the club house.  If the weather is bad\, we will meet remotely.\n\nPlease join us for the discussion. We have no rules except to enjoy discussing books of interest with our neighbors!\n\n \nThe book we have selected is The Lions of Fifth Avenue: A Novel by Fiona Davis. \n\n\n\n\nGoogle Books writes:\n\n \n“A Good Morning America Book Club Pick and a New York Times bestseller!\n\n“A page-turner for booklovers everywhere! . . . A story of family ties\, their lost dreams\, and the redemption that comes from discovering truth.”—Adriana Trigiani\, bestselling author of The Shoemaker’s Wife  \nIn New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis’s latest historical novel\, a series of book thefts roils the iconic New York Public Library\, leaving two generations of strong-willed women to pick up the pieces. \nIt’s 1913\, and on the surface\, Laura Lyons couldn’t ask for more out of life—her husband is the superintendent of the New York Public Library\, allowing their family to live in an apartment within the grand building\, and they are blessed with two children. But headstrong\, passionate Laura wants more\, and when she takes a leap of faith and applies to the Columbia Journalism School\, her world is cracked wide open. As her studies take her all over the city\, she is drawn to Greenwich Village’s new bohemia\, where she discovers the Heterodoxy Club—a radical\, all-female group in which women are encouraged to loudly share their opinions on suffrage\, birth control\, and women’s rights. Soon\, Laura finds herself questioning her traditional role as wife and mother. And when valuable books are stolen back at the library\, threatening the home and institution she loves\, she’s forced to confront her shifting priorities head on . . . and may just lose everything in the process.”

SUMMARY:FCF Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of Fishing Creek Farm Book Club will be Wednesday\, March 31 at 7PM. The meeting will be virtual and the book we will discuss is “A Woman of No Importance” by Sonia Purnell. A review and joining information for the discussion are posted below. Everyone is invited. Contact Susan Magazine at 301-213-1799 or Susan@magazinefamily.org to join or learn more about the group. \n  \n  \n \n  \nA review by NPR\, Genevieve Valentine \nHardcover\, 352 pages \nIt sounds like propaganda meant to misdirect WWII Germans: a lone foreigner running riot in occupied France\, everywhere at once\, unrecognizable despite a trademark gait\, able to bewitch information out of anyone\, single-handedly stirring up resistance — and then vanishing. \nThe German secret police couldn’t even be sure what country she was from. It would be easy to believe the Limping Lady wasn’t real. \nBut she was. \nVirginia Hall was one of the earliest Special Operations Executive agents Britain sent into occupied France to stir up resistance against the Nazi/Vichy regime\, where she laid critical groundwork for an organized Resistance in southern France — and later led a cell herself. She isn’t totally unknown; there have been other biographies\, as well as a CIA training hall named in her honor and even a Drunk History sketch. But Sonia Purnell’s A Woman of No Importance is a gripping take\, tracing Hall’s life in the context of hurdles she faced from allies — as much as from enemies. \nShe was an unlikely choice for SOE field work; she was a woman\, she was American\, and she had a disability (a hunting accident left her with a wooden leg she called Cuthbert) that made her easy to identify. But the speedy Nazi takeover of Europe was more alarming than the usual prejudices\, and in 1940 she was in France with only the barest brief — build a Resistance\, no matter what. \n\nPlease join my meeting from your computer\, tablet or smartphone.\nhttps://global.gotomeeting.com/join/950235573 \nYou can also dial in using your phone.\nUnited States: +1 (408) 650-3123 \nAccess Code: 950-235-573 \nNew to GoToMeeting? But after growing up together in a small\, southern black community and running away at age sixteen\, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults\, it’s everything: their families\, their communities\, their racial identities. Many years later\, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white\, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. SUMMARY:Evening of Music
DESCRIPTION:Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the corresponding measures in place by Governor Hogan and County Executive Pittman\, we do not anticipate that the FCF children’s Halloween party\, nor the Holiday party for adults will occur. In lieu of those activities\, we thought it would be nice to offer an outside event during good weather that complies with current regulations. The event will comply with all established guidelines of social-distancing and mask use\, and attendance requires completion of a waiver. Guidance from the Anne Arundel Executive WebSite is printed below. Please be advised that this event is subject to change if the State of Maryland or Anne Arundel County modify applicable restrictions. \nJoin some of your neighbors in the clubhouse parking lot for some socially distanced outdoor music. Pressing Strings\, the Naptown native band whose music has been called “heartfelt yet funky and feel-good\,” will be providing the entertainment. \nOn Sunday\, October 4\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\, Pressing Strings will perform on the upper deck of the clubhouse.  Neighbors are invited to bring their own chairs and enjoy the event in a designated\, socially-distanced area that will be marked off in the parking lot. Children are welcome. Due to spacing needs to keep this event compliant and safe\, only 50 residents will be admitted. You must RSVP to attend the event.  Send to boardmal@fishingcreekfarm.org  \nThis event is free! You may begin arriving at 4:30 p.m. Only RSVPs will be admitted. Anyone over the age of 18\, must sign a waiver. \nSafety Measures and Waivers – We ask all those in attendance to help ensure that we can keep this event safe. Strict compliance with safety protocols will be required. Circles will be “chalked-off” in the parking lot and families are asked to remain in within their circle. Masks are required to be worn as you enter\, leave\, and move about the event area. Once you are seated\, masks will be required if you cannot keep 6 feet away from others who are not in your immediate household. We will have the lower level bathrooms open for use; however\, only one patron at a time will be admitted – children can be admitted with a parent\, and masks are required to be worn when walking to and from the restrooms and while using them. All attendees over the age of 18 must sign a waiver to bring to the event acknowledging the COVID-19 risk.  Once you RSVP\, a waiver will be sent to you. \nMarina and Boat Ramp Access – The section of the parking lot that provides access to the boat ramp will be kept clear.  We ask that anyone parking in the general area of the parking lot between the boat ramp and the marina gate move their vehicle by 4 p.m. because we will be marking socially-distanced spaces.\n——— \nFrom the Anne Arundel County Executive’s WebSite: \nIndoor social gatherings of more than 25 people and outdoor social gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited. \n\n“Social gatherings” include\, but are not limited to\, parties\, cookouts\, concerts or performances\, parades\, festivals\, conventions\, fundraisers\, and other gatherings that are not associated with operating or patronizing a business.\n\n   From the Anne Arundel County Health Department WebSite: \n    When is a face mask or covering required? \nAnne Arundel County has issued a Public Safety Order that requires face masks or coverings to be worn \n\nInside at all times when you are face to face with the public\nIn retail establishments\nAt a restaurant or bar (including outside dining) when you are not eating or drinking\nWhen providing or receiving personal services at a hair salon\, tattoo parlor or nail salon\nIn a business that does not serve the public\, a face covering is recommended when you are not in an office alone with the door shut OR you cannot keep 6 feet away from others.\nOutside in public spaces when you cannot keep 6 feet away from others who are not in your immediate household

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Fishing Creek Farm book club’s next meeting date is August 24th at 7:00pm. It will be held virtually through a video conference. The book is Lilac Girls: A Novel\, by Martha Hall Kelly. \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine\, this remarkable debut novel reveals the power of unsung women to change history in their quest for love\, freedom\, and second chances. \nNew York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France. \nAn ocean away from Caroline\, Kasia Kuzmerick\, a Polish teenager\, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors\, one false move can have dire consequences. \nFor the ambitious young German doctor\, Herta Oberheuser\, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired\, though\, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. \nThe lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück\, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents—from New York to Paris\, Germany\, and Poland—as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten. \nPlease contact Susan Magazine susan@magazinefamily.org if you have any questions. \nHere are the videoconference details: \nFCF Book Club\nMon\, Aug 24\, 2020 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM (EDT) \nPlease join my meeting from your computer\, tablet or smartphone. \nhttps://global.gotomeeting.com/join/859799829 \nYou can also dial in using your phone. \nUnited States: +1 (571) 317-3112 \nAccess Code: 859-799-829 \n
