SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The next Fishing Creek Farm Book Club meeting will be July 25\, 2023 at 7:00 pm at the Clubhouse. The book that the group has chosen to read is The Wind Knows My Name by Isabel Allende. Goodreads states: \n\n\n\n\n“This powerful and moving novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Long Petal of the Sea weaves together past and present\, tracing the ripple effects of war and immigration on one child in Europe in 1938 and another in the United States in 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\nVienna\, 1938. Samuel Adler was six years old when his father disappeared during Kristallnacht—the night their family lost everything. Samuel’s mother secured a spot for him on the last Kindertransport train out of Nazi-occupied Austria to the United Kingdom\, which he boarded alone\, carrying nothing but a change of clothes and his violin.Arizona\, 2019. Eight decades later\, Anita Diaz\, a blind seven-year-old girl\, and her mother board another train\, fleeing looming danger in El Salvador and seeking refuge in the United States. However\, their arrival coincides with the new family separation policy\, and Anita finds herself alone at a camp in Nogales. She escapes through her trips to Azabahar\, a magical world of the imagination she created with her sister back home. \nAnita’s case is assigned to Selena Duran\, a young social worker who enlists the help of a promising lawyer from one of San Francisco’s top law firms. Together they discover that Anita has another family member in the United States: Leticia Cordero\, who is employed at the home of now eighty-six-year-old Samuel Adler\, linking these two lives. \nSpanning time and place\, The Wind Knows My Name is both a testament to the sacrifices that parents make and a love letter to the children who survive the most unfathomable dangers—and never stop dreaming.” \n\n\nPlease join the discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan S. SUMMARY:Cancelled: June 1 Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Fishing Creek Farm Book Club on June 1\, 2023\, at 7:00 pm to discuss the classic For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. Unless it is raining\, we will have our first outdoor meeting on the deck of the Clubhouse. \nAmazon writes about this book: \n” In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight” and one of the foremost classics of war literature. \nFor Whom the Bell Tolls tells of loyalty and courage\, love and defeat\, and the tragic death of an ideal. Robert Jordan\, a young American in the International Brigades\, is attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of a guerilla leader’s last stand\, Hemingway creates a work at once rare and beautiful\, strong and brutal\, compassionate\, moving\, and wise. Greater in power\, broader in scope\, and more intensely emotional than any of the author’s previous works\, For Whom the Bell Tolls stands as one of the best war novels ever written.” \nI look forward to seeing everyone there. \nSusan S. SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The next book we will read is The Cape Doctor by E. J. Levy. We will meet on March 14\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fishing Creek Farm Clubhouse. \nGoodreads describes “The Cape Doctor” as an “enthralling novel\, inspired by the life of Dr. James Miranda Barry that brings this captivating character vividly alive.” \nA “gorgeous\, thoughtful\, heartbreaking” historical novel\, The Cape Doctor is the story of one man’s journey from penniless Irish girl to one of most celebrated and accomplished figures of his time (Lauren Fox\, New York Times bestselling author of Send for Me). \n“Beginning in Cork\, Ireland\, the novel recounts Jonathan Mirandus Perry’s journey from daughter to son in order to enter medical school and provide for family\, but Perry soon embraced the new-found freedom of living life as a man. From brilliant medical student in Edinburgh and London to eligible bachelor and quick-tempered physician in Cape Town\, Dr. Perry thrived. When he befriended the aristocratic Cape Governor\, the doctor rose to the pinnacle of society\, before the two were publicly accused of a homosexual affair that scandalized the colonies and nearly cost them their lives.” \nFor the April meeting\, we will read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. We will read and discuss Deacon King Kong by James McBride for the May meeting. \nThe members plan to read at least one Ernest Hemingway novel. We welcome suggestions for which of Hemingway’s books the members would like to discuss. \nAll the best for continued good reading\, \nSusan Magazine\nsusan@magazinefamily.org\n301-213-1799
